For the past 145 years – since Mary Baker Eddy rediscovered it – walking along the pathway of Christian healing has been central to the Bible-based theology of Christian Science, as taught in Mrs Eddy’s key text Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

Christian Scientists don’t have – or want! – a monopoly on effective prayer-based healing.  Quite the opposite!  Mary Baker Eddy expected that her reintroduction of systematic prayer-healing to Christian practice would catch on among Christian denominations, and indeed among humankind more broadly. And so it has been doing.

While people of sincere faith might approach their healing practices differently – and each experience of healing will be unique to the individual whose health is restored – we can learn from one another.  It is in this spirit of mutual blessing that this blog mingles accounts of Christian Science healing with thought-provoking healing narratives from other spiritually committed individuals which we have found on the internet.  (Please alert us to any you find which we have not yet included!)

Sceptical criticism of prayer-based healing often dismisses such accounts as “anecdotal evidence”, but the medical profession has been increasingly accepting the value of narratives within the context of their own explorations of illness and their efforts to find a cure.  While these spontaneous testimonies of healing might not match what some would consider the rigour of a medically recorded narrative, they certainly touch the heart with their sincerity and honesty, and will be “acceptable to those who have hearts”, to borrow a phrase from Mary Baker Eddy.  Their very occurrence can also spark the imagination of reasoned thinking.  I hope that gathering such narratives together via this blog will be of value to open-minded truth-seeking scientists as well as to enquirers of all faiths.

It is the conviction of Christian Scientists like myself that the healings of Jesus and his earliest followers evidenced the entirely good nature of God as eternal, universal, Principle and impartial, divine Love, whose  ever-present curative power is accessible in every age and by all people.

While I myself would not want to be without Mary Baker Eddy’s incisive and inspiring explanation of the Bible’s spiritual core and healing heart in Science and Health, I can’t help but value every precious indication I encounter – in one-on-one conversations as well as on the web – that the power of prayer is alive and well and working God’s wonders in the world today.

The following are the healing prayer narratives that have so far featured in this blog:
