Seeking a more spiritual prescription for healing? How about adjusting your focus!

I found the optical illusion below on a blog called youmightfindyourself.  The author explains:

If your eyes follow the movement of the rotating pink dot below, the dots will remain only one color – pink. However if you stare at the black “+” in the center, the moving dot turns to green. Now, concentrate on the black “+” in the center of the picture. After a short period, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see only a single green dot rotating…

Try it and see…especially the last part, focusing on the cross until the pink disappears.  It is impressive!

I don’t know the physics of why this happens in this particular case, but it does illustrate an interesting point…that what you see might depend on where you put your focus.

This echoes physically – in a thought-provoking and fun way! – what Christian Science identifies spiritually: where you put your focus matters.  In Christian Science healing there is a recognition of the need to take the mental focus off a sick body’s (sometimes incessant!) demands for attention and steer it in the direction of an underlying spiritual wellness that is more deserving of attention. That is, the basic idea in Christian Science is that the true “blueprint” of “man” (all men and women) is God’s own nature, which man accurately reflects, and that God being forever hale and hearty as perfect Spirit, so man is whole and well as His/Her spiritual idea.

By intelligently focusing on this spiritual model of God and God’s reflection, many people have found – similarly to the disappearing of the pink dots – that symptoms of ill health can likewise disappear from consciousness.  The difference is that when the “pink dots” of ill health disappear from thought through a more spiritual focus people have also found that the symptoms can actually disappear in practice too.

This is not a type of visualisation technique, trying to replace a material picture of sickness with a material picture of wellness and expecting the latter to replace the former.  The fact is that what could be called “the spiritual vision” approach of Christian Science to healing wouldn’t work if there wasn’t actually a God of impartial Love to focus on!  More importantly, doing so changes far more than just a physical condition.  Precisely because it is all about bringing out God’s nature in one’s experience, it brings health and character changes.

There is really no formula for how to do this, beyond being willing to open one’s thoughts to a more spiritual perspective on life, substance and intelligence…but reading the Bible – particularly the healing works of Jesus – and Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures with an open mind gives fresh insights and inspiration towards this end.

These books actually bring a spiritual focus to the whole of one’s life, which is their real joy – touching all aspects of experience: individual purpose, family, friends, work, community…

So when life seems like it is getting a little dotty (pink, green, or otherwise!) Christian Science affords a fresh perspective and real possibilities of healing.

I like it!! It so perfectly illustrates the ‘tricks’ that sometimes get played when we rely only on physical sense. I too have found that relying on my innate spiritual senses bring me closer to God and show me the true picture in every situation.
