Healing prayer narratives: A childhood memory of polio healed, and more recent freedom from flu

On Wednesday evenings, Christian Science churches around the world host meetings which include spontaneously shared “experiences, testimonies, and remarks on Christian Science” for anyone curious to hear these accounts.

Such experiences and testimonies of the practicality of the power of God’s love can range from the modest to the marvellous.

This blog’s weekly Wednesday focus is on what I have been calling “healing prayer narratives”, and this week I want to share a thought from a fellow Committee on Publication here in the UK, that responds to a topic made newsworthy by billionaire philanthropist, Bill Gates.

Bill Gates - The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation

In setting up the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Microsoft founder, and former CEO, Bill Gates has, for some years now, admirably spearheaded the recent commitment to giving by billionaires wishing/willing to have a substantial portion of their fortunes used for philanthropic purposes around the world.

His last four Tweets have been on what he refers to as “the war against polio”, which he and others are waging in good faith where the disease still presents a formidable face.

While grateful for the efforts of philanthropists and others who team up to alleviate this and other contagious conditions through medical means, it can also be inspiring to illustrate how the spiritual application of Christian Science has also been applied to address contagious conditions like polio in individual cases.

In the following audio clipping, my colleague Clarissa, the Committee on Publication for Cambridgeshire, recalls her sister’s healing of polio symptoms when the disease was widely feared here in the UK. In the four-minute audio, she also shares her own quick healing of flu symptoms.

Christian Scientists are often assumed to be against medicine, rather than understood as appreciating the efforts of all those working to alleviate the tragedy of disease, while honestly preferring a spiritual approach to healing. Long after her discernment, proof and articulation of the healing power of a spiritual understanding of God’s omnipotence, the Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy made charitable contributions to local hospitals.  She also had huge respect for the “Bill and Melinda Gates” of her day, the great Jewish philanthropists Baron and Baroness de Hirsch.  As she wrote of them in the New York Mail and Express, “The movement to erect a monument to the late Baron and Baroness de Hirsch enlists my hearty sympathy. They were unquestionably used in a remarkable degree as instruments of divine Love.”

She contributed $500 to construction of that monument, equivalent to about $10,000 in today’s money.

  1. Reflecting on architecture, Christian Science, and the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation | Spirituality & Health - September 17, 2011

[…] There are many individual and collective efforts working towards goals similar to the Foundation, including efforts using alternative approaches to healthcare. For instance, in every Christian Science church in Africa and throughout the world are Christian Scientists healing illness or disease in themselves and others through a non-medical spiritual approach. Here is an account of a man in the Democratic Republic of the Congo healed of a medically-diagnosed case of malaria. And to hear someone share how they were once healed of polio by this method, click here. […]
